Deborah Keogh is an Assistant Lecturer in the TU Dublin School of Art and Design. Deborah’s background is in commercial interior design in the hospitality sector and has over twenty years professional design experience. Deborah’s work is grounded in three-dimensional and spatial design, with a strong emphasis on student learning and lectures in Construction Studies, Retail Design, Computer Aided Design, Digital Modelling, and Colour & Perception. Deborah is actively involved in a range of community engagement projects and Students Learning with Communities (SLWC) initiatives, where students are immersed in authentic, real-world design experiences that aim to support both local communities and student learning.
Research Interests: Deborah’s research explores the role of spatial ability in design education and practice, with a particular focus on how spatial cognition scaffolds creative problem-solving and ideation among novice and expert designers. Design is inherently spatial, and Deborah’s work examines how spatial skills supports divergent thinking and innovative practices in the process of designing. She investigates the bidirectionality of design learning and explores how spatial ability and design ability are interrelated. In addition to attending conferences and delivering workshops, Deborah integrates her research into her teaching practice to support the development of spatial thinking for an inclusive model of design learning.
