Research

Research and scholarship are essential to what we do in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. It inspires and empowers our teaching, shapes our faculty identity, and grounds our ambition to becoming a leading centre of practice-based research in the arts and humanities.
As a faculty our strong tradition of creativity, industry and societal engagement, and disciplinary diversity is unique on the national stage. We believe that research across the arts, humanities, and social sciences plays a critical role in understanding the human experience, addressing societal challenges, and in developing sustainable democratic futures. These core values, allied with our belief in the value of scholarship and knowledge creation for its own sake, drive our research culture.
Research is focused through our seven research centres, the Society and Culture Hub, our academic and industry partnerships, and our membership of the European University of Technology alliance. Key research areas include inclusion and equitable societies, sustainable tourism and cultural heritage, Irish Studies, creative practice in the arts and media, and digital futures.
Our postgraduate research at PhD, DMus, and MPhil levels is interdisciplinary in nature, spanning the faculty’s schools and disciplines. Postgraduate students engage with our international research networks, industry partners, faculty research centres, and research hubs.
The faculty has pioneered practice-based research in Ireland leveraging strengths in art, design, and media to offer critical perspectives on societal challenges and produce creative excellence. The TU Dublin Conservatoire offers doctoral research in musical performance, with our unique DMus programme, alongside PhDs in composition, musicology, and drama.
We are home to the largest culinary arts school in Ireland where research in gastronomy, culinary innovation, and food science spans disciplines. The School of Tourism and Hospitality management leads in research on sustainable innovation in tourism on the national and international stage with research on cultural, heritage, food tourism, and festivals.
Research in the school of Social Sciences. Law and Education encompasses a broad range of societal challenges from social care and early childhood education, refugee and asylum law and policy, security policy, to the sociology of AI-human interaction.
To propose postgraduate research projects, we encourage prospective candidates to consider the school (or schools) and potential supervisors that best align with their research interests. We recommend that you develop your research proposal before contacting a potential supervisor. This should include:
- Project abstract
- Project description including the aims, objectives, and central research question of the research
- Research design and methodology
- How the project will advance state-of-the-art and contribute new knowledge
- Alignment with school and faculty research and expertise
We welcome applications for postgraduate research throughout the year.
