The Irish Pub: Invention & Re-Invention
Congratulations to Tracey Dalton, lecturer in TU 975 BA (Hons) Interior Design who, has written on the experiences of interior designers in the production of the exported Irish pub as part of a recently published interdisciplinary book on the Irish pub, The Irish Pub: Invention and Reinvention, edited by Perry Share of ATU and Moonyoung Hong (PhD TCD) of University of Hong Kong, published by Cork University Press. This stems from Tracey’s prior knowledge of the design process, based on retrospective design practice with “Irish Pub Company”. In “Exporting the Irish Pub: An interior designer’s perspective, 1990 to 2010” (Ch.7), she investigates the experiences of the designers of these pubs, through the lens of production, a perspective which is rarely covered in the academic sphere. In the words of the editors:
“The ubiquitous faux Irish pub is an obvious target for criticism and critique but, in the book, Tracey Dalton takes a more nuanced approach as she deconstructs the strategies employed by the “Guinness Irish Pub Concept’: the typologies, designs and methodologies developed by Irish Pub Company and Guinness. Rather than a critique from the outside, Dalton, as a design insider, presents us with the creativity and effort of those involved in the successful (re-)invention of the pre-packaged Irish pub.“ (Hong and Share, 2024)
