Inside the Hainan Living Lab: Global Events, People and Partnerships
Students on the Hainan University - TU Dublin joint BSc in Events Management programme recently completed an intensive period of applied learning through direct engagement in major international events across Hainan, with formal recognition from the Deputy Ambassador of Ireland to China.
Students participated in a range of high‑profile events, including the Boao Forum for Asia, working with European teams at the Hainan International Cycling Race, and contributing to the Hainan Product Expo 2026, one of China’s most significant international trade events.
During the Expo, students worked in professional roles with the Hainan Provincial Bureau of Economic Development and the International Liaison Office, as well as supporting event operations, logistics, exhibitor engagement and acting as representatives for international destinations. A number of students also supported Irish exhibitors at the Irish Pavilion, including Catherine O’Grady Powers of Glen Keen Farm, Mayo, with Glen Keen Estate Whiskey, and Peter Clancy of the family‑run Lough Ree Distillery in Longford.
A key highlight was the formal recognition of students’ partnership with Irish exhibitors by Barry Mulligan, Deputy Ambassador of Ireland to China. A courtesy visit involving Hainan University and TU Dublin colleagues further acknowledged the strength of the long‑standing Ireland-China educational partnership and TU Dublin’s commitment to transnational education, with discussions also addressing wider issues shaping higher education globally.
Overall, the experience highlighted the value of Hainan as a full‑scale living lab for the students studying events management, supporting their professional development while strengthening connections and partnerships between Ireland, China, industry and international events.
