Melinda’s main area of interest lies in the conservation and management of semi-natural habitats to address the issue of biodiversity loss. She is experienced in carrying out field-based research and developing plans for managing habitats in a sustainable way.

Melinda’s research and teaching interests include assessing the nature conservation value of semi-natural habitats, investigating and monitoring the impact of anthropogenic activities on the natural environment and carrying out ecological research into patterns of biogeography and the relationships between plant communities and environmental variables, such as water chemistry and hydrogeology. Melinda has experience in carrying out conservation status assessments under the Habitats Directive, drawing up guidelines on monitoring EU priority habitats, working with local authorities to develop conservation management plans for designated sites, monitoring rare legally-protected species and advising on the eradication of invasive alien species.

Melinda holds a PhD in Natural Sciences from Trinity College Dublin. She lectures and leads field trips on the topics of habitats, biodiversity, ecology and earth sciences.
