Community, Culture and Conversation: Film Screening at TU Dublin

Published: Monday 16 March 2026 - 09:43

TU Dublin was proud to welcome the Phibsboro Film Society and Phibsboro for All for their latest movie screening at our Grangegorman campus. A large crowd attended the showing of The Visitor, a 2007 American drama film written and directed by Tom McCarthy. The film centres on a lonely man in late middle age whose life changes after a chance encounter with an immigrant couple, compelling him to confront issues of identity and immigration.

The film screening was followed by a discussion on immigration and asylum, featuring a panel led by Ken McCue, Cultural Planner and member of Phibsboro Film Society and TU Dublin alumnus, and Lucky Khambule from Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland

As part of the film’s subplot, Tarek, a Palestinian-Syrian musician, teaches Walter, a lonely American university professor, how to play the djembe, a rope-tuned drum originating from West Africa. The audience in the Central Quad, including local residents, staff, and students, were treated to a live djembe performance by Nico Severin a Chilean-Irish musician based in Dublin.

The next film screening will take place on 14 April 2026. A few days prior to the screening, an information table for students will be located in the Quads. Anyone interested in attending can contact brian.a.murphy@tudublin.ie.
