Amid renewed global excitement about humanity’s return to the Moon with Artemis II - over 50 years after Apollo 17 departed lunar orbit in 1972 - students at TU Dublin recently explored careers in aerospace and space innovation at a successful event hosted by the TU Dublin Engineering Society. The event was primarily organised by Brandon Shumba, a second-year Electrical and Controls Engineering Student in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Held on April 8th in the Central Quad at the Grangegorman campus, the session brought together leading voices from the aerospace sector to share real-world insights, career pathways, and opportunities for students interested in space engineering.

The event featured guest speaker Dr Niamh Shaw, a mechanical engineer, STEM advocate, and prominent space communicator. Dr Shaw spoke about her career journey, her work in promoting STEM, and her passion for space exploration, encouraging students to pursue opportunities in the sector.

She was joined by David Bushman, an experienced aerospace engineer who has worked with organisations such as NASA, Virgin Galactic, and American Aerospace. He shared valuable insights into working in the global aerospace industry, highlighting the importance of adaptability, technical expertise, and collaboration in space systems engineering.

Throughout the session, students gained practical knowledge of career pathways in aerospace engineering, the role of teamwork in complex engineering projects, and emerging opportunities in the space sector, while also benefiting from first-hand insights and experiences shared by industry professionals. The event was well attended and provided an engaging platform for students to connect with industry experts, ask questions, and gain inspiration for their future careers.

This initiative reflected TU Dublin’s ongoing commitment to connecting students with industry leaders and supporting the development of the next generation of engineers and innovators in the rapidly evolving space sector.
