Hugh Mcatamney Appointed World Triathlon's Technical Delegate at the 2022 Commonwealth Games

Hugh Mcatamney, Head of the School of Media at TU Dublin, has been appointed to the prestigious and important role of World Triathlon's Technical Delegate at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The appointment is the first time an Irish technical official has been promoted to lead at a such a major international competition and reflects a long career of officiating for Hugh, as well as the high standing of Ireland's technical official programme.

Hugh was selected from an international panel of qualified officials for the role, which involves representing World Triathlon before and during the Games. Among his responsibilities will be ensuring that all rules, regulations, codes, guidelines and requirements as per the Host Agreement and World Triathlon Event Organisers Manual which relate to the sport of triathlon are complied with.

He has officiated at over 10 World Triathlon Series events including seven as Technical Delegate, as well as officiating at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

He recently led the team of officials at the 2019 World Triathlon Grand Final in Lausanne Switzerland. Previously, he is a founder member of 3D Triathlon Club and has also held the position of Race Director for the 2010 European Triathlon Championships in Athlone.

20 YEARS

Hugh said the appointment is the culmination of a long triathlon career:

"As a technical delegate, you are always looking to test yourself at the best events in the world. The Commonwealth Games is an Olympic level event, and there won't be too many opportunities to get selected for one."

"I started as a race organiser and refereed almost 20 years ago, and if you had told me then that I would officiate at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, I wouldn't have believed you. The success and experience I have enjoyed over the years is testament to the technical official pathway developed by World Triathlon and adopted by Triathlon Ireland."

He added: "I urge anyone interested in volunteering in the sport to get involved and sign up to the TI Technical Official programme."
