Two TU Dublin Fulbright Scholars Announced for 2020/2021

Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade with special responsibility for the Diaspora and International Development, Ciarán Cannon TD, has announced that Susan Boyle and Anne Marie Shier are Fulbright Irish Awardees for 2020/2021.

At a time when international education programmes face huge challenges, the enduring Fulbright Programme will support thirty-six remarkable academics, professionals and students from Ireland to go to the USA and collaborate with their U.S. counterparts. 

Susan Boyle is a PhD candidate based at the School of Business and Humanities on the University's Tallaght Campus. She received her B.A. in Drama and Theatre Studies from University of Dublin, Trinity College and holds an M.A. in Performance Studies from The University of London, Royal Holloway. Her doctoral research is in the transdisciplinary area of beverage studies and uses performance analysis and performance theory to examine the role of place, story and narrative in immersive beverage experiences, it is funded by a TU Dublin Scholarship. She is an Oxford Symposium of Food and Cookery Outstanding Speaker (OSFC), an OSFC Julia Child's Foundation scholarship recipient and an award-winning member of the Guild of Beer Writers. As a Fulbright Creative-Ireland Fellow to the Smithsonian Museum of American History, she will work with archival material in the museum's collection to investigate the influence of European immigrants on brewing in pre-1920 America. 

Anne Marie Shier is a Lecturer in the School of Languages, Law and Social Sciences at TU Dublin and a Doctoral Candidate at University College Cork. Her doctoral research focuses on reunion in intercountry adoption in the Irish context. She holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences and Master of Social Work from UCC and a Pg Diploma in Teaching and Learning from TU Dublin. As a Fulbright Awardee based at The Rudd Adoption Research Program, University of Massachusetts, Amherst she will continue her Doctoral Research on reunion in intercountry adoption.  

In his remarks to the awardees, Minister Ciarán Cannon T.D. said: “The role of Fulbright Awardees in driving international research and keeping global channels of communications open is more important than ever. Fulbright has always propelled collaboration between the brightest minds. I wish this year’s Awardees every success for their time in the United States.”
