Ireland at Venice 20 May 2021

Published: 14 May, 2021

Catherine Martin, T.D., Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, invites you to the launch of Entanglement, Ireland’s representation at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, curated by ANNEX on Thursday, May 20, 2021, at 3:30pm.

Donal Lally of the School of Creative Arts, with two TU Dublin PhD students – Sven Andersen and David Capener – are three of the 6-person ANNEX team who have developed Ireland’s representation at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

Entanglement will be open to the public in Venice from 22 May to 21 November 2021.

Entanglement draws attention to some of the extraordinary transformations and profound contradictions being brought about by information technologies, decoded from the lens of Ireland’s significant role in telecommunications historically and today. Through a multi-media spatial experience that uses thermodynamic processes as a link between the architectures of the campfire and the data centre, the pavilion exposes the romantic metaphor of the cloud as a virtual, ethereal space. By using the prism of heat, it explores the materiality of data and the spaces it produces alongside the interwoven human, environmental, and cultural impacts of information and communication technologies. Entanglement compels us to re-evaluate the utopian fantasy of digital communication and to reflect on how we live together through data infrastructure, today and into the future.
