Celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities
Sunday, 3 December, is International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), a day about promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities at every level of society and development.
TU Dublin aims to be inclusive in all aspects of the work of the University and to create a welcoming atmosphere in which to work and study. We want to take this time to highlight the work of our Disability Support Team and make all our staff and students aware of the support on offer.
Disability Support Services team
The Disability Support Service has expanded its staff numbers and scope of colleagues to a team of 16 staff members. The increase in the Disability Support Service enables students registered with the Disability Support Service, in all TU Dublin locations to have a dedicated Learning Support Officer and Assistive Technology Officer. The supports are now universal across all sites, ensuring consistency of approach for students with a disability. Contact our team here.
New Strategic Initiatives
TU Dublin recently received funding via the Fund for Students with Disabilities (FSD) to deliver on a number of strategic initiatives to further enhance and support students with disabilities in TU Dublin. We have provided access to a range of suitable study, group work, social and rest spaces for students with a wide range of needs across our campuses. These include:
Enclosed Study Pods, also known as learning pods, are small enclosed booths that can be used to support students' learning by helping students learn and focus. Our study pods, now located around our campuses, offer well-insulated soundproofing, power supply, ventilation and personal lighting. These spaces provide a quiet and private space for our students and can also help students manage their sensory experiences while on campus.
Open Study Pods - by integrating study pods into open areas across our campuses, comfortable group learning spaces around our campuses can be both encouraging and motivational.
Phase II of the Universally Accessible/Inclusive Work and Social Spaces will be completed in January 2024.
Mazemap – TU Dublin's Digital Wayfinding
Navigating an unfamiliar campus can be intimidating, not to mention stress-inducing. Mazemap's digital wayfinding helps users orient themselves, find what they are looking for, and plan their route to the desired destination on campus. It can be a valuable resource to our students, reduce stress, save time, and offer independence.
Regarding accessibility, features include high contrast mode, screen reader, multiple language settings, and for wheelchair users, a feature offering the 'most accessible route' avoiding stairways and obstacles. TU Dublin Digital wayfinding was launched in October 2022 and is available to all TU Dublin students and staff.
