The initiative is supported through funding from the Higher Education Authority (HEA), following a national announcement by the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science that €250,000 would be allocated to higher education institutions to ensure students can access free period products while studying.
Using this funding, the university Campus & Estates team has now installed free period product dispensers at several locations across its campuses, making essential items readily available to students who need them. The initiative aims to ensure that no student is disadvantaged in their education due to period poverty and to support a more inclusive campus environment.
In addition to providing free products, the funding supports broader awareness and education about period dignity and encourages the use of sustainably produced products in line with national climate policy.
Welcoming the initiative, Naomi Sebastine, President of the TU Dublin Students’ Union, said:
“Access to period products should never be a barrier to participating fully in university life. Making these products freely available across campus is an important step in supporting students’ wellbeing and dignity and ensuring that everyone has the resources they need to focus on their studies.”
Immanuella Oba, Vice President for Welfare & Equality at TU Dublin Students’ Union, added:
“Period poverty is a real issue for many students. Providing free and easily accessible products on campus helps ensure that no one has to worry about managing their period while trying to focus on their studies.”
This initiative forms part of TU Dublin’s ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and to supporting the well-being and participation of all students across the university.
How to Access the Products
Free period products are now available to students through dedicated dispensers located in bathrooms across TU Dublin campuses. These dispensers have been installed in a range of student facilities and other high-traffic buildings throughout the university.
