Google’s European Headquarters in Dublin once again hosted a celebration of talent, ambition and opportunity this week as students from across Ireland gathered to receive Insight Scholarships.

Funded by Google.org and coordinated by the Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics in DCU, the programme supports students from underrepresented backgrounds who are pursuing STEM related degrees at third-level institutions.

This year, three TU Dublin students were among those recognised, receiving their scholarship awards from An Taoiseach at a special ceremony attended by students, families, supporters and education partners from across the country. The new scholars were joined by TU Dublin classmates and students who received Insight Scholarships last year, who returned to support and celebrate the newest cohort (pictured below).

The Insight Scholarship Programme provides financial assistance of €5,000 per year alongside mentorship opportunities that will help students build networks and navigate their career paths in fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital safety.

The ceremony opened with remarks from several influential speakers, including Head of Google Ireland Vanessa Hartley, who highlighted the importance of representation in the technology sector. Addressing the awardees, she said:

To our scholars, women in STEM, first-generation students, students with disabilities, and members of the Traveller and Roma communities, your voices are vital. You aren’t just students; you are the people who will lead, build and run the future of Irish technology.

An Taoiseach Micheál Martin also emphasised the importance of widening participation in STEM and ensuring that talented students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to thrive. Vanessa Hartley added that she was excited to see where the scholars’ journeys would take them, joking that she would be delighted to be replaced by one of these hardworking students in the future.

One of our TU Dublin scholarship recipients commented

Being awarded this scholarship is an incredible milestone, especially considering where my journey began. I came from a school environment where nearly a third of my peers did not sit their Leaving Cert. To go from that setting to sharing a room with and being mentored by academic and industry leaders who are quite literally changing the world is an incredible shift.

While the financial award provides essential stability, mentorship has been the most valuable element. It has provided me with a clear roadmap to top tier companies like Google.

Claire Dunne, Access Support Manager at TU Dublin, highlighted the broader impact of the initiative:

It’s brilliant to see so many TU Dublin students at events like this, taking up space and rubbing shoulders with fellow tech enthusiasts at Google. TU Dublin has the largest number of awardees receiving scholarships, which is a fantastic achievement for the students and the university.

Events like this matter because they celebrate inclusion and highlight the real impact of widening participation initiatives in higher education. Programmes like the Insight Scholarship show what’s possible when industry and education work together to create meaningful opportunities for students from underrepresented backgrounds. We often hear it said, talent is evenly distributed across society, but opportunity is not, so it’s encouraging to see companies playing a role in helping to tackle these wider inequalities.

Prof. Noel E. O’Connor, CEO of the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, in his closing remarks gave a special thanks to the Access Officers whose dedication to underrepresented students knows no bounds, who volunteer their time to ensure that the bursary process is student centred and reaches those who need it most.

The Insight Scholarship Programme represents a significant investment in widening participation in STEM in Ireland, with €1.5 million in funding committed over five years. TU Dublin is immensely proud of its scholars and looks forward to seeing both this year’s and last year’s awardees continue to thrive in their studies and future careers.
