Taste of TU Dublin, an initiative delivered by TU Dublin’s Access and Outreach team, has been recognised by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) as an example of good practice in its National Access Plan 2022–2028 Impact Case Studies publication.

TU Dublin is committed to broadening access to meaningful education and career pathways. The University combines academic rigour with inclusive, work-integrated learning from the outset, supporting diverse learners through placements, apprenticeships, community partnerships and professional accreditation. This approach creates a rich environment for academic and research collaboration, with a focus on impact, equity and relevance.

Championing Inclusion

Access and equity are central to TU Dublin’s mission. The University has a strong record of supporting students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, people with disabilities and other groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

The scale of this commitment is reflected in the 2025 national student figures, which highlight TU Dublin’s leading position in supporting access and inclusion:

  • 6% of TU Dublin’s total student population are access students across all categories – the highest proportion nationally.
  • More than 2,500 students from socioeconomically disadvantaged areas – the highest number nationally.
  • More than 1,900 full-time students from socioeconomically disadvantaged areas – the highest number nationally.
  • Almost 2,000 students with disabilities – the third-highest number nationally.

Developed and delivered by TU Dublin’s Access and Outreach team, Taste of TU Dublin puts this commitment into practice by providing prospective students, particularly those from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education, with an opportunity to experience university life first-hand.

Through a programme of campus-based activities and engagement with academic departments, lecturers and current students, participants can explore a range of academic programmes, learn about the supports and services available, and build the confidence to consider progressing to higher education.

The HEA’s recognition highlights the important contribution Taste of TU Dublin makes to the objectives of the National Access Plan, helping to widen participation, address barriers to higher education and create more inclusive pathways into university.

The initiative also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, by promoting equitable access to educational opportunities and helping people from all backgrounds realise their potential.
