Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) is pleased to announce the appointment of Gerard Howlin as Chair of its Governing Body. A respected public affairs consultant and former senior government adviser, Mr Howlin brings decades of experience in public policy, strategic communications and national governance.

Mr Howlin has held prominent advisory roles across several Government departments, including the Department of the Taoiseach, where he contributed to policy development during periods of major national change. In recent years, he has established himself as a leading commentator and consultant, providing analysis on public affairs, politics and societal issues. His extensive understanding of Ireland’s policy landscape and his commitment to higher education and civic engagement make him exceptionally well suited to guide TU Dublin during a period of strategic evolution and growth.

Welcoming the appointment, Dr Deirdre Lillis, President of TU Dublin, said:

“I am delighted to welcome Gerard Howlin as Chair of the TU Dublin Governing Body. His deep insight into public policy, his strategic judgement and his longstanding commitment to public service will be invaluable as we continue to build a university of ambition, achievement and impact for our students, staff and the communities we serve. I look forward to working closely with him as we move into the next phase of TU Dublin’s development.”

Eoin O’Shea, Interim Chair of the TU Dublin Governing Body, also welcomed the news:

“It has been a privilege to serve as Interim Chair and I am very pleased to hand over to someone of Gerard’s calibre. His appointment comes at a pivotal time for the university as it strengthens its practice-led, enterprise-engaged learning approaches, deepens its industry partnerships and continues to enhance the student experience. Gerard’s leadership will be of enormous benefit to TU Dublin.”

Speaking following his appointment, Gerard Howlin said:

“I am honoured to take on the role of Chair of the TU Dublin Governing Body. TU Dublin is making a significant contribution to Ireland’s social, cultural and economic life and it is a privilege to support its mission. I look forward to working with the President, the Governing Body and the wider university community to help realise the full potential of this remarkable institution.”
