TU Dublin Athletes Lead Irish Charge at World University Games

TU Dublin is proud to announce that six of our student-athletes have been selected to represent Ireland at the 32nd World University Games, which begin next Thursday in the Rhine-Ruhr region of German

More than 8,500 athletes and officials from over 100 countries will gather in Germany’s largest metropolitan area to compete across 18 sports over 10 days, making it one of the biggest global multi-sport events of 2025.

Ireland’s team, selected by Student Sport Ireland, features 22 student-athletes competing in six sports: Archery, Athletics, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, and Tennis.

We are delighted that TU Dublin has the largest representation from any single university on Team Ireland, with six athletes flying the flag across three sports:

  • Archery: Rogan Cunningham, Sam Delaney, and Fionn Roche
  • Taekwondo: Leroy Nsilu Dilandu and Ryan Doyle
  • Tennis: Ammar Elamin

These athletes will compete alongside Ireland’s top student talent, including Paris Olympians Kate O’Connor (Heptathlon), Sophie O’Sullivan (1,500m), and Nicola Tuthill (Hammer), as well as other standout athletes in athletics, swimming, and table tennis.

For the first time ever, Ireland will field a table tennis team at the Games, and this year also marks Ireland’s return to tennis at the event after a 16-year absence.

Speaking at the official team announcement, held at the TU Dublin Grangegorman campus, Head of Delegation Niamh O’Callaghan said:

“The World University Games is a pivotal moment in an athlete’s journey — a chance to compete on the global stage, represent Ireland with pride, and showcase the incredible standard of student sport in this country. We’re incredibly proud of this team and can’t wait to follow their progress.”

The launch was attended by Team Ireland athletes and officials, TU Dublin President Dr. Deirdre Lillis, Student Sport Ireland Chairperson Morgan Buckley, National Governing Body representatives, and SSI staff.

We wish all of Team Ireland — and especially our own six outstanding students — the very best as they take on the world.

You can follow their progress, check competition schedules, and keep up with all the latest news via the Student Sport Ireland World University Games Hub and SSI’s social media channels.

Go Team Ireland — and go TU Dublin!
