TU Dublin launches first National Tertiary Degree with direct applications
TU Dublin is delighted to announce the university’s first National Tertiary degree and first National Tertiary degree in politics: the BA (Hons) in Politics, Society and Media, in collaboration with the City of Dublin Education and Training Board (CDETB) and Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Education and Training Board (DDLETB). The degree is accessed through direct entry, without a need for application through the CAO points process.
Commencing in September, the four-year, SUSI-funded programme offers a seamless pathway from further to higher education. Students begin at one of the partner colleges, City of Dublin FET Colleges in Ballyfermot and Rathmines, or Blackrock Further Education Institute, joining TU Dublin’s School of Media in third year.
Responding to the demand for graduates with media, communication and critical thinking skills, the degree is tailored for students passionate about civic engagement and public affairs. With direct application to the Further Education & Training (FET) partners, small class sizes, and student supports from the FET colleges and TU Dublin, the programme is especially suited to mature learners, returners to education, and anybody seeking a career in politics, media or social advocacy.
Head of TU Dublin’s School of Media, Dr Caroline Ann O’Sullivan, said: ‘We are delighted to launch this innovative pathway to a degree in Politics, Society and Media. We are confident that widening access to politics and public affairs will change the political landscape in Ireland. TU Dublin has an excellent track record of educating leaders across the media and political spheres, and this applied degree programme is designed to empower the next generation of practitioners with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to launch and sustain a successful career.’
The degree provides academic training in politics, society and media. Weaving theory, practice-based, work placement and volunteering modules, graduates will be equipped to make a contribution to civic society. Students will explore a range of modules in advocacy, social policy, government and public administration, and audio and digital media production.
Head of Discipline of Journalism and Communications in TU Dublin’s School of Media, Dr Kevin Hora MPRII, said: ‘This degree broadens our provision of applied political education, which already includes the MA in Public Affairs and Political Communication. We look forward to welcoming future political and social leaders on both programmes, which are open to applicants until September.’
Applications for this unique degree are now open, offering an inclusive and accessible route into careers that shape our society and democracy. This degree is for students who want to campaign for change, work in government, or tell the stories that matter through media. The BA (Hons) in Politics, Society, and Media will equip them with the tools, confidence, and networks to make a meaningful impact.
