Earlier this month, TU Dublin, in partnership with the Black Irish Sisters (BIS) Network, proudly hosted Ireland’s first-ever Black Women’s Conference. Held in TU Dublin’s Concert Hall, the event brought together an intergenerational audience of Black women, men, and allies from across Ireland, and as far afield as the United States, for a day of connection, celebration, and empowerment.

The energy in the room was warm, electric, and deeply affirming. The conference was opened on behalf of TU Dublin President by Dr Orla McDonagh, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, who welcomed guests and reflected on the significance of this historic event. She highlighted the importance of the University’s partnership with BIS Network as a living model of allyship, grounded in shared vision and values. Dr McDonagh also spoke about her own experience of allyship as a student in the United States, adding a personal note to her welcome.

Distinguished guests included Senator Linda Nelson Murray, who addressed the audience with a powerful message of solidarity and support, and MEP Nina Carberry, who stood in allyship with the community. Minister for Education Helen McEntee and Lord Mayor of Dublin Emma Blain also sent messages of support, underlining the national significance of the occasion.

Keynote speakers Sandra Babu Boateng and Lola Molola inspired attendees with moving reflections on leadership, legacy, and the transformative power of women coming together in partnership and purpose.

Feedback from the day spoke volumes: “empowering,” “inspiring,” “incredible,” and “beautiful.” Many young attendees shared that they had yearned for a space like this to be seen, heard, and celebrated.

The resounding call from the community was clear: this must become an annual event.

With planning already underway for next year, the Audacity Conference marks not only a moment in time but also the beginning of a powerful tradition at TU Dublin.
