TU Dublin President, Dr Deirdre Lillis, appeared before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science this morning to highlight the need for dedicated student accommodation within the Technological University (TU) sector. Dr Lillis joined representatives from other Technological Universities across the country to advocate for increased government support to deliver affordable and accessible housing for students.

Currently, most Technological Universities, including TU Dublin, have no on-campus accommodation, leaving students to rely heavily on the private rental sector. This shortage of dedicated housing has created significant challenges, including rising costs and limited availability, which negatively impact the student experience and create barriers to accessing higher education.

In her opening statement, Dr Lillis emphasised the vital role student accommodation plays in fostering student success:

"Student housing is more than a place to sleep – it builds wellbeing, belonging, academic success and peer learning."

Dr Deirdre Lillis also reaffirmed TU Dublin’s commitment to collaborating with key partners to address the crisis:

"TU Dublin stands ready to work with Government, the TU sector and stakeholders to deliver affordable student accommodation, while improving services for all students."
