TU Dublin Student Vladimir Filatov Honoured with Prestigious Hamilton Prize in Mathematics
TU Dublin Mathematics and Statistics student Vladimir Filatov has been recognised as one of Ireland’s leading undergraduate mathematics students at the 2026 Hamilton Prize awards, hosted by the Royal Irish Academy.
Vladimir, who is in the final year of his BSc in Mathematics and Statistics at TU Dublin, was among nine students from universities across Ireland honoured at a special ceremony on Friday, 16 October, as part of the annual Hamilton Day celebrations.
The prestigious Hamilton Prize in Mathematics, awarded by the Royal Irish Academy and sponsored by Ibec, recognises outstanding undergraduate mathematics students nominated by their universities for their academic excellence and achievements.
Congratulating Vladimir on his success, Dr Chris Hills, Head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at TU Dublin, said:
“Mathematics and Statistics are at the forefront of tackling current challenges. We are very proud of Vladimir who epitomises this practical approach to mathematics and is part of the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.”
As part of the celebrations, Vladimir and his fellow award recipients attended an exclusive masterclass with internationally renowned mathematician and Fields Medallist Professor James Maynard, hosted by Ibec.
Professor Maynard also delivered the 2026 Hamilton Lecture, The Mysteries of Prime Numbers, exploring the importance of prime numbers in mathematics and everyday life. His lecture examined some of the mathematical questions that have challenged researchers since ancient Greece, alongside the new opportunities and challenges emerging through advances in artificial intelligence.
The awards ceremony was officiated by Professor Dan Carey, President of the Royal Irish Academy, who highlighted Ireland’s longstanding contribution to mathematical discovery and scientific excellence.
Hamilton Day commemorates the remarkable discovery of quaternion algebra by Irish mathematician William Rowan Hamilton on 16 October 1843. Hamilton famously made his breakthrough while walking along the Royal Canal in Dublin, carving his mathematical formula into the stonework of Broome Bridge in Cabra.
Congratulations to Vladamir on this outstanding achievement!
