Dr Deirdre Lillis, President of TU Dublin, was delighted to welcome a delegation from the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK) to our Grangegorman campus.

MUK is relocating from its city centre sites to the Otto Wagner Area (OWA), the former psychiatric hospital site featuring 34 heritage-listed Art Nouveau pavilions set within parkland. The campus is being transformed into a suburban hub for science and culture, a vision that closely mirrors TU Dublin’s own move from city-centre locations to Grangegorman, developed on the grounds of the former St Brendan’s Hospital.

The Austrian delegation was led by Vice Rector Dieter Boyer, responsible for Campus Development and External Relations at MUK. Over two productive days, the delegation met with Dr. Lillis, Gerard Howlin, Chair of the Governing Body, Eoin O’Leary, former Irish Ambassador to Austria and member of the University Finance and Property Sub-committee, as well as staff from Campus Planning and the Government and Community Advocacy office. They also engaged with a representative from the Grangegorman Development Agency and enjoyed an extensive campus tour guided by Collette Burns and Dr. Orla McDonagh.

Dr. Lillis expressed particular gratitude to retired colleague Dr. Noel O’Connor, who returned to share his extensive expertise in campus development and relocation with the Austrian delegation. TU Dublin also thanks the current Irish Ambassador, Barbara Cullinane, for facilitating the introduction to MUK, helping to foster what proved to be a highly valuable and positive exchange between the two universities. This visit highlighted the shared ambitions of both institutions and reinforced the power of international partnerships in shaping the campuses of the future.
