TU Dublin celebrates International Open Access Week 2026
‘The cost of knowledge’ is the theme of 2026’s International Open Access Week, highlighting the fact that the costs to access and share knowledge continue to increase, frequently dramatically. TU Dublin is not immune to these cost pressures both in accessing knowledge resources and sharing the knowledge created within the institution.
While we are operating in an increasingly challenging landscape where the costs publishers charge both to read and publish material are rising rapidly, this Open Access Week we wanted to celebrate a step that TU Dublin has taken to help open up the knowledge created within the university.
Earlier this year, TU Dublin’s Governing Body approved a revised Open Access Policy. This policy requires that all works published by TU Dublin staff and students be made open access through the university’s research repository, Arrow. Staff can deposit a suitable full text version of a research publication on Pure and students can deposit on Arrow. This policy has a wider scope than the previous iteration of the policy including all types of research publications.
Based on a model institutional policy developed by the SCOIR project, funded through the National Open Research Fund and co-led by TU Dublin, this policy assists TU Dublin researchers retain rights for their work and comply with funder policies.
In addition, TU Dublin is happy to announce that the Read & Publish agreement which many Irish Universities have with Wiley for publication in its Gold Open Access journals has been expanded for 2026. This will allow more TU Dublin authors make their work open access at the point of publication. TU Dublin is a member of the Irish Research eLibrary (IReL) which provides access to e-resources and open access publishing agreements. While the allocation for Wiley had been exhausted earlier this year, when a surplus was identified, Wiley Gold was identified as a priority in order to maximise publishing opportunities for researchers across IReL institutions. Further details are about the expanded deal is available here.
