Advancing Air Quality and Health: TU Dublin’s Professor Patrick Goodman in National and European Spotlight
Professor Patrick Goodman, School of Physics, Clinical and Optometric Sciences and the Sustainability and Health Research Hub, and Joint Principal Investigator of the TU Dublin Air Quality Research Group, continues to play a leading role in advancing national and international understanding of air quality and its impacts on health.
The TU Dublin Air Quality Research Group, which spans multiple Schools across the Faculty of Sciences and Health and welcomes new collaborators from across the University, has secured approximately €3 million in competitive research funding over the past three years. The group continues to grow its interdisciplinary footprint and strengthen TU Dublin’s position as a national leader in air quality research.
Professor Goodman is internationally recognised for his expertise in the relationship between air pollution and public health, with his work on the Dublin Smoky Coal Ban widely regarded as one of the global benchmark studies demonstrating the substantial public health benefits of reducing air pollution.
Guest Speaker at Irish EPA National Air Event 2025
On 20th November, Professor Goodman delivered a forward-looking presentation at the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Air Event 2025 in Kilkenny, themed ‘Clean Air, Healthier Lives.’ His talk formed part of the ‘Actions for Change’ session, alongside Dr Aileen Bright and Luke Tully, highlighting innovative approaches to air pollution, health research, community science, and public consultation. Organisers praised the contributions of all presenters, noting that their insights were central to the event’s success in bringing together policymakers, researchers, advocates, and community leaders.
Feature in EuroHealthNet Video Launch
This week, Professor Goodman appears in a newly launched EuroHealthNet video on solid fuels in Ireland, where he discusses key findings and lessons from the Dublin smoky coal ban research. The video forms part of a European Climate Foundation funded series and is being disseminated widely across EU health, climate, and housing networks. The video series was also showcased at the European Public Health Conference, with further dissemination opportunities planned.
Through his research and public outreach, Professor Goodman is driving tangible improvements in air quality, empowering communities, and shaping policies that protect public health.
