TU Dublin welcomes this week's announcement that Jesús María Frías Celayeta, a Professor and the Leader of the Sustainability and Health Research Hub at TU Dublin, has been appointed to the new Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) Scientific Committee, a national expert body that provides independent scientific advice on food safety and nutrition.

The Committee, which will serve a five-year term from March 2026 to March 2031, was appointed by Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, Ireland’s Minister for Health. Established under the Food Safety Authority of Ireland Act 1998, the Scientific Committee provides expert scientific analysis on food safety risk assessment, supports evidence-based risk management decisions, and advises on the nutritional content of food to help protect public health.

Professor Frias Celayeta joins a multidisciplinary group of 15 leading scientists and experts from across Ireland’s research, public health, and government sectors. The committee will be chaired by Geraldine Duffy of Teagasc, Ireland’s Agriculture and Food Development Authority.

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Jesús María Frías Celayeta said:

I am honoured to contribute to the work of the FSAI Scientific Committee at a time when food safety and nutrition are increasingly important global issues. This role provides an opportunity to support evidence-based policies that protect consumers while strengthening collaboration between academia, regulators and industry. It also reflects TU Dublin’s commitment to research that delivers meaningful impact for society both locally and globally.

The FSAI Scientific Committee plays a critical role in ensuring that Ireland’s food safety system is underpinned by rigorous, independent science. Welcoming the new committee, Wayne Anderson, Director of Food Science and Standards at the FSAI, highlighted the importance of expert input in safeguarding public health.

The FSAI is a science-based authority, focused on food control activities that are underpinned by scientific risk assessment. The Scientific Committee plays a vital role in providing scientific advice to the FSAI from a multidisciplinary team of expert and independent scientists with a wealth of experience in food safety and nutrition.

Professor Jesús María Frías Celayeta’s appointment reflects TU Dublin’s commitment to advancing knowledge and delivering real-world impact through research and collaboration. TU Dublin actively contributes to society both locally and globally by fostering partnerships across sectors and engaging closely with industry, government, and communities.

Through appointments like this, TU Dublin researchers continue to shape national and international policy and provide expertise that supports safer, healthier food systems for society.
