TU Dublin’s Languages Studies Hosts International Albert Camus Society Conference
TU Dublin’s Language Studies recently welcomed scholars from around the world for the annual Albert Camus Society Conference, held on 14th-15th November at the Aungier Street campus. The event was organised by Dr Aoife Connolly, Lecturer in French in TU Dublin in partnership with Dr Peter Francev of Victor Valley College, California.
The interdisciplinary gathering drew participants from Canada, France, Greece, Hungary, Slovakia, the UK, the USA and Ireland. Attendees represented a wide span of academic fields, including languages, literature, philosophy, education, religious studies, social justice, peace studies and Camusian studies.
Across two days of presentations and debate, scholars shared new and emerging research aimed at deepening understanding of the Algerian-born French writer and philosopher Albert Camus (1913-1960). Panels explored a wide range of themes, including a fresh reassessment of L’Exil et le Royaume (Exile and the Kingdom), educational encounters in Camus’s works, and examinations of the sacred and Christianity in his writing. Other papers addressed Camus-inspired revolt in the Parisian banlieues, as well as the roles of sleep and sleeplessness in his philosophical literature, alongside numerous film-based, literary and philosophical discussions.
Speakers were also invited to record their presentations for Albert Camus Radio and to submit their written papers for consideration by the Journal of Camus Studies, extending the reach of their work to international audiences.
TU Dublin was honoured to host this year’s special anniversary conference, which marked 20 years of scholarship by the Albert Camus Society. Next year’s conference is scheduled to take place in Poland, with further details to be announced soon.
