All Arts students must study a core curriculum, which is is broken into both Mandatory and Elective Modules.
Mandatory Modules
In your mandatory modules you'll dive into 'Thinking Techne' - Techne being an ancient Greek term for art, craft, technique or skill. These classes will look at the role Technology has in our lives, including how it was/is imagined and created, how it impacts our mind, body and spirit, how it is used in nation-building, how it is impacting human memory, and how it is impacting our society.
Mind Body & Technology
We'll examine how old Western ideas that separate the mind from the body have contributed to issues like sexism, racism, and environmental problems. This course will show you how our thoughts are deeply linked to our bodies and technology, encouraging you to think critically and get involved in practical solutions.
Imagining Technology
In this course, you'll explore how technology impacts us through analyzing science fiction and modern classic films and books. We'll tackle themes like AI, what's ethical, and how to live sustainably, sharpening your critical thinking and discussion skills along the way.
Memory & Technology
You'll explore how digital devices, data storage, and even surveillance influence what we remember and who controls that information in the digital age. We'll investigate everything from file formats and cookies to the bigger questions about accessing and preserving memories. Plus, we'll think about the environmental and ethical downsides of storing so much data.
Sites of Industrial Ecology
This class looks at major infrastructure projects in countries, e.g. the Shannon hydroelectric scheme, to understand why they were built, how they worked, and what they tell us about engineering, politics, and national identity, with appropriate field trips
Technology & Society
You'll learn how technology changes everything from our environment and industries to our culture, and then use that knowledge to work with others on projects that make a real difference in the world.
