Spanish Studies 

The major in Spanish Studies has been developed specifically for the Arts programme. It draws on a suite of well-established modules and principles which underpin the very successful Bachelor of Arts (Honours) International Business and Languages programme, in TU Dublin.

The major in Spanish Studies provides you with opportunity to achieve high levels of linguistic proficiency in Spanish and to explore a range of cultural and social perspectives in Spanish speaking countries and communities. Literature, history & cinema are some of the directions you may pursue for more in-depth exploration. You will engage with our team of dedicated teachers and internationally recognized scholars who are delighted to share their passion and expertise through the diverse range of modules on offer in this Spanish Studies Major.

As a student, you will have six mandatory modules. You will also be able to choose from optional modules and pathways as you progress through the major. Four of the mandatory modules build and develop foundations for language learning and cultural awareness. Two mandatory modules offered in the later stages of your programme of study will enable you to progress towards advanced language proficiency and enhanced cultural understanding.

Students will practice, develop and demonstrate development in all skill areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening in communicative language classes. Students will also explore social and cultural issues in Spanish speaking regions, and extend their reading and listening skills, in particular, through study of a range of cultural products. This approach provides insight and scope for development of the intercultural and professional competencies required to function professionally in a Spanish-speaking environment. Informed by the Arts lens and the approach adopted for this major, students will synthesise critical thinking, breadth of understanding and research skills in their capstone project/dissertation.

A major in Spanish Studies allows you to study one of the world’s major languages and its rich cultural heritage. A major in Spanish Studies offers you a different perspective on the world, extends your ability to think critically and provides you with knowledge and skills required for an ever-evolving Europe, and for international dialogue, cooperation and trade beyond the English-speaking world.

Perhaps your interests lie primarily with how languages and cultures shape and frame our experience of diversity and the societies in which we live, perhaps you wish to develop your passion for literature, cinema, history or thought, or perhaps you are most excited by the opportunity to experience Spanish life and culture by studying abroad? A major in Spanish Studies will provide you with the linguistic, analytical and cognitive skills to thrive, and with resources and outlooks that are valued and sought in many sectors.  

Graduates of the major in Spanish Studies on the Arts programme are likely to pursue career opportunities in many sectors, especially if they complement their study in Arts with electives or even a double major in disciplines as disparate as computer science, media, tourism & hospitality management or food science. It is the ideal major for those with a real interest in Spanish language and culture.

You will be able to develop your interests and passions through the choices you make, and through your engagement with the creative and critical approaches to learning that you will experience. As linguists with demonstrable ability to communicate effectively through Spanish and with heightened sensitivity for communicating with diverse audiences, graduates will be able to draw on valuable skills, insight and knowledge to build careers in both public and private enterprises.
