Programme Details
The Young Creators’ Programme (YCP) is a media studies programme for Transition Year students who attend TU Dublin’s link schools. It enhances students’ literacy and communications skills and requires them to plan, develop and record either a tv show or a podcast. They learn:
- the different roles and skills required
- how to create content and prepare scripts
- to interview people
- how to present information.
With support from the School of Media, they record their content using TU Dublin’s state-of-the-art recording facilities. Second year Drama students from TU Dublin facilitate a workshop where TYs engage in a series of active learning methods that helps them to develop their communication and teamwork skills. Members of the team represent the group and deliver a short, informal presentation that provides some background information about the show they’ve created.
Every student receives a workbook that provides a step-by-step guide through the process; they also receive a certificate of participation for competing the programme.
The YCP creates a direct link between schools and higher education and promotes college life as attractive and attainable. The opportunity to visit a university, use the facilities and talk and collaborate with current TU Dublin students and academics makes the idea of going to college an achievable goal and encourages young people to continue their education.
Skills developed: Students develop and apply the following skills:
- Literacy and media literacy skills
- Communications and public speaking skills
- Ability to work as a member of a team, while also taking on personal responsibility
- Decision making abilities
- Creativity
- Organisational and critical thinking skills
- Ability to identify their skills, strengths and interests.
Programme Details
Participants: All TU Dublin link schools are eligible to take part.
Length: The programme runs over 12 weeks between January and May. Schools can tailor it to suit students’ needs, school timetables or the size of the group. Each team creates one tv show or one podcast.
Location: TU Dublin facilitates three workshops for each school and each workshop takes place on a TU Dublin campus.
Team Size: Our tv and podcast studios have limited capacity and a maximum of 25 students can attend the on-campus recording session in workshop 3.
Teachers: The programme will particularly appeal to English teachers; however, it can be delivered by any subject teacher as all of the information will be provided and TU staff provide continuous support.
Resources:
- Each student receives a printed workbook that will provide all of the information, activities and worksheets needed
- Participating teachers are invited to attend a short online information session in December, where we will run through the programme and answer questions.
Curriculum Links: The programme provides fun, interactive and practical activities that increases confidence and skills. It develops creativity and literacy skills, which are applicable to all academic subjects. It supports LCA English, Communications and Social Education and also the Senior Cycle Key Skills Framework.
Taking part gives students an insight into the basics of creating and producing a programme that requires a diversity of skills. This helps students recognise their interests, strengths and abilities and can assist them when choosing their Leaving Certificate subjects.
TU Dublin Collaboration: Within TU Dublin, the School of Media and Drama lecturers and students collaborate with the Access and Outreach team to deliver the programme.
Participation in the YCP meets the Personal Skills requirements for a Bronze Gaisce award.

Take Part: We will be in contact with schools in September and schools who are interested in taking part can register their interest. Participation is on a first come, first served basis.
