A message from Mark

“There is no magic required to find ideas for start-ups. For example; when you see in your own life that there is an unaddressed problem that no product or service seems to deal with; then that is a potential start-up idea. It is very likely that many other people experience this same issue. The ideas for some of the start-ups I've been involved in came about while chatting in a pub for instance. This 'idea' step represents the vital '1% innovation' of the process.

The '99% perspiration' comes next. Regardless of industry; my philosophy is always the same: build the minimum possible prototype product you can to test your idea; see what works and what doesn't; and then adapt your product to those learnings. This adaptation can include throwing out the original idea if necessary! Defer and minimise the requirement for capital for as long as possible.

Even if you don't want to create a start-up; this same process is needed in established companies also; using the idea of 'start-up within a company'. In this model; a small team within an established company is empowered to create a minimum viable product in order to start the feedback process that is so essential for new products.”
