Creating Community and the SDGs

Join GAP Ireland and TU Dublin in the GLAS@TUDublin community garden at TU Dublin’s Blanchardstown Campus for an #SDGWeek event exploring how local spaces and community action can help create stronger, more resilient and sustainable communities.

It can be difficult to feel hopeful when faced with global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, inequality and poverty. Progress can feel slow, and the scale of these challenges can sometimes make it difficult to know where to begin.

But change can also start locally. Across Ireland, people are coming together in their communities to care for nature, grow food, learn new skills, make their neighbourhoods more welcoming and find practical ways to live more sustainably.

At this event, we’ll explore how spaces such as community gardens can contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and help build stronger, more connected communities. We’ll look at the links between food, biodiversity, climate action, health and community, and consider how local initiatives can contribute to wider global change.

The GLAS@TUDublin community garden is a great example of this in practice. It provides a space to grow food and support biodiversity, while also bringing people together, sharing skills and knowledge, and creating opportunities to connect with our local environment.

There will also be an opportunity to get hands-on and make butter from scratch, exploring how food can bring people together and create shared experiences.

As part of SDG Week, 19–27 September, this event is an opportunity to learn, connect and reflect on what the Sustainable Development Goals mean in our own communities — and how we can all play a part in creating positive change.

Join GAP Ireland and TU Dublin on 22 September to explore how community action can help turn the Global Goals into local action.
