Overview:
In response to the increasingly complex social challenges we face today, we have organized a talk event aimed at bringing together both migrants and local communities. It is part of Dublin Festival of History. Our goal is to foster mutual understanding and appreciation of each other’s perspectives, challenges and endeavours, creating a stronger, more inclusive and collaborative community where everyone feels a sense of belonging and the shared responsibility.
This special event explores powerful stories of migration, identity, and community transformation, highlighting the enduring theme of resilience across different contexts. From Chinese migrants forging new lives in Ireland, to Irish emigrants abroad, and the regeneration of Dublin’s iconic Fatima Mansions, these talks reflect the evolving social fabric of Ireland.
In a time when the idea of “home” is constantly being redefined and communities face growing social and cultural challenges, this series of talks invites us to reflect on how individuals and communities respond to upheaval, rebuild, and shape new futures.

- From Shadows to Stability: The Impact of Ireland’s Regularisation Scheme on Chinese Migrants
Speaker: Dr. Meishan Zhang
This talk explores the transformative impact of Ireland’s 2022 Regularisation Scheme on Chinese migrants who had been living without legal status. Dr. Zhang shares personal stories and key insights into how this scheme enabled migrants to access better work opportunities, achieve a sense of stability, and feel greater belonging. It also highlights the vital role played by community organisations and NGOs in supporting this transition—ultimately celebrating the strength and resilience of migrants rebuilding their lives in Ireland.
- Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Identity Reconstruction of Chinese Migrant Women in Ireland
Speaker: Dr. Jun Ni of TU Dublin
Focusing on Chinese women’s migration to Ireland, this talk explores the stages of cross-cultural adaptation—from initial culture shock to a mature reconstruction of identity. Dr. Ni identifies both the barriers and enablers of integration, examining how these women navigate the challenges of cultural difference while reshaping their place in Irish society. As Ireland becomes increasingly diverse, this talk offers important insights into the migrant experience and highlights the mutual challenges and responsibilities of integration.
- Beyond Leaving: Stories of Irish Emigrants in the Wake of the 2009 Crash
Speaker: David Monahan
This talk reflects on Ireland’s own migration narrative—specifically the wave of emigration following the 2009 economic crash. Through personal stories and broader context, it explores what drove people to leave, how they were received abroad, and how these experiences shaped Irish identity and attitudes toward migration. A timely reminder of Ireland’s global connections and shared experiences of displacement.
- Regeneration of Fatima Mansions: Physical and Social Transformation in a Diverse Urban Setting
Speaker: Joe Donohoe
Once one of Dublin’s most disadvantaged estates, Fatima Mansions has undergone a profound transformation—physically, socially, and culturally.
