The Spaces We Cannot Easily Define Are Often the Ones that Shape Us Most.

We tend to think of “between” as absence — the pause before a decision, the threshold before a room, the gap between what something was and what it is becoming. This year’s graduating cohort argues otherwise. Across Interior Design, Visual Communication, and Visual & Critical Studies, fifteen graduates have spent the past year working in the in-between.

SPACES IN BETWEEN brings together research that treats the threshold itself as material. Some projects excavate and rebuild from what is left over. Others translate and build connections. And some ask who the “between” is even for.

What unites this diverse body of work is not a shared subject but a shared instinct: that the space between things — between disciplines, cultures, materials, or bodies — is not a gap to be closed but a site worth occupying. These graduates do not resolve the tension of living between places, identities, and systems. They design from inside it.
