Project Title: Educational Integration for Refugee Children: Building an Inclusive Ireland

Project Abstract:

My research explores the educational experiences of refugee and migrant students in Irish secondary school settings, with a particular focus on the barriers and enablers that shape their sense of belonging, participation and academic engagement. In response to Ireland's rapidly increasing refugee population since 2015, the study addresses the limited evidence base concerning how national policies translate into everyday school realities for young people.

Phase 1 of the project involves in-depth, semi-structured interviews with students, caregivers and teachers to develop a deep understanding of their lived experiences. Phase 2 employs a participatory action research approach in which young people act as co-researchers, co-creating practical solutions through methods such as the World Café and Photovoice. By centering young people's voices, this research aims to contribute actionable insights that support inclusion, empathy, and equitable participation in Irish schools.
