Project Title: "Gender diversity in the Irish judiciary: how has increasing representation of women shaped judicial decision-making, what barriers persist in senior legal roles, and why do women judges matter?"
Project Abstract: This research explores the growing presence of women in the Irish judiciary and asks: how has this shift influenced judicial decision-making, what barriers still hinder women’s progression into senior legal roles, and why do women judges matter? Despite high numbers of women studying and practising law in Ireland, they remain underrepresented in judicial appointments. Drawing on analysis of appellate court decisions, a survey of over 700 legal professionals and students, and a review of systemic challenges, the study examines both the symbolic and substantive value of gender diversity on the bench. It offers a nuanced look at how representation shapes legal reasoning, where women continue to face obstacles, and how a more inclusive judiciary may better reflect and serve Irish society.
