Project Title: Exploring Scenario Planning as a Strategic Foresight Tool for Sustainable Tourism Policy and Decision-Making in Ireland

Project Abstract:

The Irish tourism sector faces increasing uncertainty from global crises such as pandemics, climate change, technological disruption, and geopolitical shifts. These challenges demand tools that support long-term, resilient, and adaptive policy development. Scenario planning, a strategic foresight methodology, offers a structured approach to anticipate alternative futures and make decisions under uncertainty. Despite its relevance, scenario planning remains underutilised and under-researched within Irish tourism policy and strategic planning.

This project seeks to address that gap by investigating how scenario planning can support more effective, sustainable, and future-resilient decision-making in Irish tourism. The study will engage with tourism professionals to explore their perceptions, experiences, and openness to scenario-based strategic planning.
