Project Title Documenting Operatic Innovation in 21st-century Ireland
Project Abstract
There has been a growth of interest in contemporary Irish opera, in Ireland and abroad, in the 21st century. This project will create an overview of 21st-century operatic practice, drawing together works from a broad range of contexts and creative teams that are not generally viewed as one body of work, offering a wider perspective to operatic practitioners and audiences. It will make 21st-century opera more accessible and foster creative engagement in both industry and the community. The creation of databases and specialised resources will facilitate the revival, recycling and repurposing of existing Irish operas and aid performers and educators in creating the tools to recreate operatic works. It will illustrate ways in which existing works can act as models for new creativity and track technological development and artistic innovation. It will provide an infrastructure for a cluster of new research projects in the field, encompassing a variety of disciplines. This may lead, in turn, to synergies and collaborative strategies with international partners for further development. This project will raise awareness of the extent of operatic creativity in Ireland in the 21st century and support TU Dublin’s Research Priority Area: Culture, Innovation & Inclusivity in a Changing Society.
