The North Dublin Union was a former workhouse that had served as a Poor Law Union, later repurposed for internment. In 1923, it served as a detention camp for female republican prisoners during the Irish Civil War, holding over 500 women. From May - December it was a site of resistance and survival. The women turned imprisonment into insurrection. They organised. They revolted. They went on hunger strike. They renamed themselves The Devil-May-Cares.
Declared by the then president W.T. Cosgrave to be “the mainstay of the trouble,” these women were seen as more dangerous than bombs and bullets. Their crime was conviction. Their punishment was captivity. Their response was defiance. Drawing on prison registers, seized correspondence, national archival testimony and surviving material artefacts, THE DEVIL MAY CARES is a summoning of their strength and spirit, performed on the former grounds of the North Dublin Union.
