As an experienced academic, I collaboratively teach high quality, practice-led, research-informed human resource management (HRM) modules up to Masters’ level. This teaching is based on contemporary theory and complimented by my undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation supervision, and doctoral research.

My disciplinary expertise is grounded in a strong research background, as I completed my international award-winning, scholarship-funded, doctorate in human resource development, researching careers success. My research was presented with the Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Award in the HRM category. These findings, along with other HRM studies  I collaborated on, have been disseminated in international publications (four journal articles and three book chapters) and at international fora (twelve conference papers). As an expert in my field, I chaired a track (Measurement and Evaluation) at the annual conference of the Academy of Human Resource Development. In addition, I have reviewed journal articles for the boards of Organization Studies, European Management Journal, Education + Training, European Journal of Training and Development, and the Irish Journal of Management. Furthermore, I have reviewed textbooks for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Publications, Sage Publications and Palgrave Macmillan Publishers.

My teaching, supervision and research experience is supplemented by a demonstrable track record in HRM, gained while leading my own learning, consulting and coaching company. I also have considerable experience as a HR practitioner in the private, public and non-profit sectors in Ireland and am a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Teaching and Supervision  

Presented with a Teaching Innovation Award for the integration of placement learning outcomes with personal development, career planning and professional profile development for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Taught and assessed practice-led, research-informed modules at postgraduate and undergraduate levels, including Strategic Learning and Development Provision, Strategic Resourcing and Talent Management, Strategic Human Resource Management, International Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management, International Human Resource Management, and Developing Skills for Business Leadership.

Presented with TU Dublin’s First Time Supervisor Award for a scholarship application as principal supervisor for a doctoral candidate researching ‘Employee Construction of the Facilitators and Inhibitors that Influence Knowledge Sharing in a Non-Profit Organisation’.

Appointed internal examiner for a successful PhD candidate in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, who researched ‘Global Talent Management: The Identification Process of Pivotal Talent in Multinational Hotel Corporations’ (viva in June 2018).

Supervised to completion, as sole supervisor, at postgraduate level, 38 Masters’ dissertations (for example, career advancement of female leaders, career perceptions of female managers, retention of high performing female leaders, female leadership programmes, career expectations, perceptions of redundancy survivors, remote working).

Three of the students I supervised obtained a Gold Medal for achieving first place on the Masters in Human Resource Management (the dissertation accounts for 30 credits of a 90-credit programme).

Supervised to completion, as sole supervisor, at undergraduate level, 18 final-year dissertations (for example, careers of female leaders, learning and development cycle, induction, absenteeism, employee engagement, work-life balance).

Research Interests for Potential Research Students

Specific research area is career success, career management and career development. For example, examining how personal transitions can potentially trigger processes of critical self-reflection, thus having material consequences for individuals’ evaluation of their everyday career experiences.

General research areas include all areas of human resource management (HRM), particularly, learning and development, and resourcing and talent management.
