The School of Mathematics and Statistics was delighted to be involved with the 2023 Student Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) conference which was hosted in the Concert Hall on Grangegorman Campus, TU Dublin, on 13 October.

The SURE conference is an annual event that celebrates undergraduate research and showcases the diversity of research and scholarship of the highest quality undertaken by undergraduates at Technological Universities.  There were over 300 undergraduate students in attendance from all the Technological Universities in Ireland and Dundalk IT.

The conference started with Daniel Izquierdo Hijazi giving a keynote address detailing his personal and professional journey which, arising out of his final-year project, was to co-found the spin-out company, Micron Agritech. There were talks and posters from 57 recent graduates about their final year projects and advice from them about “how to do an awesome final year project”. Lastly, there was a fireside chat moderated by Dr Sean Kennedy with three experienced supervisors, Prof. Orla Howe, Dr Rena Barry-Ryan and Dr John Butler (School of Mathematics & Statistics) providing students in the audience with advice on how to develop and complete an outstanding final year project. Dr Butler also co-chaired one of the oral presentation sessions and was part of the judging panel for the best presentation.

The conference was a huge success and we look forward to the next one, in 2024, at Atlantic Technological University.
