Mathematics & Statistics at Scifest 2023

Published: 5 May, 2023

The School of Mathematics & Statistics was delighted to take part, once again, in the annual SciFest celebrations.  Lecturers from the School were involved in the SciFest event held on the TU Dublin City Campus on Friday 5 May 2023 which was once again allowed to be in person following the pandemic.

Members of the School spent the day talking with over 100 enthusiastic secondary school students about their excellent projects. John Butler, Paul Molloy and Blathnaid Sheridan were also part of the judging panel. There were approximately 60 excellent projects ranging in topics from “How Does Social Media Influence the Influencer” to “What amount of electrical current is needed to produce enough hydrogen to power every car in Ireland?”.

As part of the event, and to give the students an insight into the ongoing research at TU Dublin, John gave a 15-minute talk about his research on combining mathematics and neuroscience to study walking. A variation of the talk can be found as a SUREbyts video which is found on the SUREbyts website.

The School would like to give its warmest congratulations to all the students and their teachers who took part in the event.
