TU Dublin lecturer wins Mathsweek award

Published: 19 Oct, 2023

Ciaran O'Sullivan, a lecturer in the School of Mathematics & Statistics, was awarded the Maths Week Ireland Award for Raising Public Awareness of Mathematics, together with colleague Terry Maguire, at a ceremony in Dublin on Thursday 19 October 2023.

Ciaran has made an immense contribution to mathematics understanding and awareness over a long career in education. Based on the Tallaght location of TU Dublin, Ciaran has been instrumental in the mathematics outreach and engagement events of the University, particularly those focussing on the Tallaght region. Ciaran and Terry have also been fundamental to the Maths Eyes project which asks everyone, particularly children, "have you got maths eyes?" and provides a vital educational resource that demonstrates we are surrounded by mathematics and we all have an ability to do (and to enjoy!) maths.

Ciaran's association with Maths Week is also long standing, working closely with organisers to arrange events and bring mathematics to the public. His immense contribution, and the esteem in which Ciaran is held by colleagues, is reflected by this award and the School warmly congratulates Ciaran on his achievement.

Ciaran has now retired but maintains a strong association with TU Dublin and previous colleagues.
