Building Community: Welcoming our Female Students
CS++ Female Induction
A Warm Welcome to our First-Year Female Students!
The School of Computer Science recently welcomed our incoming first-year female students with an afternoon all about meeting new people, making connections and having some fun as they begin their university journey.
Held on 22nd September in the Central Quad, Grangegorman, the annual welcome event brought students together with CS++, peer mentors and members of the School community in a relaxed and friendly setting. We were also delighted to extend the invitation to postgraduate students and students from the School of Mathematics, making for a great mix of students and experiences.
There were no formal talks or presentations, instead, the focus was on getting to know one another. An hour of games, including Human Bingo and Would You Rather?, quickly got conversations flowing. On what was a fun filled evening we discovered one fun fact about our new students: when given the choice, the majority would rather face an 8am lecture than a 6pm one!
CS++ and our peer mentors joined in the games, chatted with students and were on hand to answer questions and share their experiences of university life. There were also some fantastic prizes, kindly provided by the Computer Learning Centre (CLC).
Events like this are an important part of helping new students feel at home in the School of Computer Science from day one, giving them an opportunity to meet their peers, build connections and know that there is a supportive community around them.
The event also reflects the school’s long-standing commitment to encouraging and supporting female participation across our computing programmes.
A huge thank you to CS++, our peer mentors and the Computer Learning Centre for helping us give our newest students such a warm welcome – and to everyone who came along and made the afternoon such a success!
