Dr. Bryan Duggan, Senior Lecturer in the School of Computer Science, represented TU Dublin on the international stage last month, delivering a talk about student creativity and an expo of student projects at GodotCon, held from 23rd–24th April 2026 at Pathé Amsterdam Noord.

GodotCon is the flagship in-person event for the open-source games and XR development community centred on the Free and Open-Source (FOSS) Godot Engine. The 2026 Amsterdam edition brought together developers, educators, studios, and enthusiasts from across Europe and beyond for two days of talks, workshops, and project showcases.

Dr Duggan's talk focused on unlocking student creativity by removing friction and enabling students to enter “flow. Referencing both Randy Paush’ Really Achieving your Childhood Dreams and Terence Mc’Kenna’s the Archaic Revival, Bryan talked about how Godot dissolves boundaries between realvirtual and the imagination. Bryan showcased a selection of projects created in TU Dublin using Godot, including award winning games from Games Fleadh, XR projects in music, sustainabilityastronomy and educationBryan also presented an update from Godó Gaedhleach, the Irish Godot User Group – which now has over 150 members from across Ireland and hosted its first meeting in March in Dublin.

Dr. Duggan's work over the years has ranged from technology for learning Traditional Irish Music to simulating emergent artificial life, with work regularly showcased at public events including Dublin Maker and Audio GardenBryan’s presence at the conference reflects a growing recognition of TU Dublin Computer Science education at the intersection of Extended Reality (XR), game development, and Creative Coding. Speaking about the event Dr Duggan said

“Godot is a great enabler as it runs well on low powered student laptops and is fast and powerful- enabling students to enter "flow" while they work on their projects”
