Cían was appointed Lecturer in Clinical Chemistry at TU Dublin in 2024, where he teaches across Medical Science, Dietetics, and Biomedical and Molecular Diagnostics programmes. He is a CORU registered medical science who spent eight years specialising in clinical chemistry and immunology within the Irish public hospital system. Following this, he trained as an epidemiologist in the UK and holds an M.Sc. degree in Epidemiology from The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, as well as an M.Res degree in Global Health from Lancaster University. Cían began his PhD at Lancaster Medical School in 2022, investigating disease transmission dynamics and contact heterogeneity. Prior to commencing his PhD, he served as an epidemiological scientist on secondment to the UK Health Security Agency, supporting the national response to the covid-19 and mpox pandemics.
His research interests include the application of data analysis and statistical modelling in the clinical laboratory, quantitative analysis of health inequalities, and epidemic modelling. He is also a long-standing contributor to the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM), most recently serving on Education sub-committee and the Council of Management.
