Email: Sarah.Egan@TUDublin.ie

Dr. Sarah Egan holds a BSc in Biomedical Science from the Dublin Institute of Technology (2018) and a PhD from Trinity College Dublin (2021). Her doctoral research focused on microbial genomics, utilizing whole-genome sequencing to investigate the population biology of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) in Irish hospitals and the genetic mechanisms underpinning linezolid resistance (LRE). She brings a valuable, well-rounded perspective, having gained practical experience as a Medical Scientist in Microbiology both during and after her PhD. Prior to her academic appointment in 2025, Dr. Egan served as an Epidemiologist with the Health Service Executive’s (HSE) National Antimicrobial Resistance & Infection Control (AMRIC) team. This role provided her with key experience in national surveillance and infection control policy, complementing her strong foundation in laboratory science and cutting-edge genomics.
Dr. Egan’s current research interests centre on microbial population genomics and understanding the horizontal gene transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes within the healthcare setting.
