Dr. Sibéal Waldron is a Lecturer in DNA and Molecular Biology in the School of Chemical and BioPharmaceutical Sciences. She graduated with BSc (Joint Hons) in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics from University College Dublin and went on to complete a MSc in Forensic Science in the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Her PhD research involved examining the early stages of infection of prion disease which she completed in the School of Biological and Environmental Science, UCD.
Sibéal then spent almost 15 years working in Forensic Science Ireland, initially as a DNA Analyst and then as a Forensic Scientist. She is an expert in DNA profiling and interpretation, blood pattern analysis and damage interpretation and as such has given evidence in court on numerous serious crimes in Ireland. She also attended crime scenes over the course of her career in her capacity as a blood pattern expert and won a Civil Service Excellence award for her work on the use of STRmix for the searching of mixed DNA profiles against the DNA database system.
Before joining TU Dublin, Sibéal spent 3.5 years lecturing in Atlantic Technological University on the BSc Forensic Investigation and Analysis programme.
Her research interests include blood pattern analysis, probabilistic genotyping and next generation sequencing, all in the context of robust and reliable interpretation of forensic evidence for a court of law. She is also a member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences.
