TU Dublin Product Design Students Showcase Real-World Innovation on Global Stage

Published: 21 May, 2025

TU Dublin is delighted to congratulate third-year BSc Product Design (TU811) students Oisín King, Oisín Tully, Ruaidhrí Sinnott, and Patrycja Kukielka on achieving second place at the 2025 NIBS Worldwide Student Business Plan Competition, an international showcase of entrepreneurial talent and applied learning.

Their project, FlockHeart, exemplifies the practical, real-world learning that is central to TU Dublin’s approach to education. Developed as part of their coursework, the team identified a real challenge facing Irish sheep farmers and created an innovative, technology-driven solution with commercial potential.

FlockHeart uses smart sensors and wireless technology to track sheep health and behaviour, sending instant alerts to farmers if any animal shows signs of distress. This smart, user-friendly system demonstrates how design thinking, technical knowledge, and business planning can be combined to solve real-world problems, exactly the kind of cross-disciplinary, impact-driven learning TU Dublin strives to provide.

The students’ success is a testament to their ability to apply classroom knowledge in a meaningful context, engage with complex challenges, and produce tangible, forward-thinking solutions for industry. Their achievement also highlights the strength of TU Dublin’s emphasis on experiential learning and industry relevance in design education.

Congratulations to Oisín, Oisín, Ruaidhrí, Patrycja and their lecturers on this impressive international recognition and for demonstrating the value of real-world learning in action.
