Men's Health Forum in Ireland
Organisation type:
Community and voluntary sector organisation

Overall interests and goals with respect to research:
The Men's Health Forum in Ireland (MHFI) seeks to promote all aspects of the health and wellbeing of men and boys on the island of Ireland through research, education, training, piloting health initiatives, networking and awareness raising.
What societal groups does the organisation aim to positively affect and support through collaborative research?
All who identify as men and boys in Ireland.
How might engaging in collaborative research with TU Dublin support these groups in the longer term?
Males constitute almost 50% of the population on the island of Ireland and, therefore, deserve to have a gender lens focused upon their specific health needs. Current evidence shows that these men experience a disproportionate burden of ill-health and die too young.
- Men on the island of Ireland die younger than women do.
- Males have higher death rates than females for almost all of the leading causes of death and at all ages.
- Poor lifestyles are responsible for a high proportion of chronic diseases.
- Late presentation to health services can lead to a large number of problems becoming untreatable.
But this is not a lost cause. Much can be / is being done to improve this situation. However, this work needs to be evidence-informed, and founded on solid research which, itself, needs to shine some light on issues which have not yet been thoroughly explored.
Colin Fowler, Director of Operations.
