Between 2024 and 2026 the GAA delivered one of the most significant transformations in modern sport. Confronted with a measurable decline in the spectacle of Gaelic football and deep community dissatisfaction, its Football Review Committee designed, trialled and permanently embedded a package of rule enhancements within twenty-four months — through open, co-created innovation with players, coaches, officials, volunteers and supporters, ratified with overwhelming democratic support and since adopted by the LGFA.
This funded MPhil, based in the Gaelic Sports Research Centre (GSRC) at TU Dublin, will deliver the first rigorous multi-study account of that transformation. Using a sequential mixed-methods design, the research will examine: (1) the antecedents of change — longitudinal game-dynamics analysis and the cultural dissonance that created the mandate for reform; (2) the anatomy of the innovation process, contrasted with the organisation's previous, less successful reform cycles; and (3) the outcomes — measured in the game's dynamics and in its renewed power as an attractive spectacle and shared community event, including diffusion to the LGFA.
The successful candidate will work with an enterprise partner dedicated to democratising sports data for societal and cultural impact. The enterprise provides the match event data and analytics underpinning the quantitative strands and hosts a three-month industry placement in Year 2. Research outputs — an Innovation-to-Cultural-Impact framework and practitioner case studies — will be disseminated with Sport Ireland to national governing bodies.
This is a rare opportunity to combine performance analytics, innovation research and the sociocultural study of sport on a live national case, with direct pathways to policy, industry and community impact.
