Sport is increasingly recognised as a powerful instrument of diplomacy, enabling states to build international relationships, strengthen national reputation, engage diaspora communities, promote shared values and generate economic opportunities.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates wishing to undertake doctoral research in the emerging field of sport diplomacy, with a particular focus on Ireland's recently launched International Sports Diplomacy Strategy (2026–2030). This represents a unique opportunity to contribute to a rapidly growing area of interdisciplinary scholarship spanning international relations, public diplomacy, sport management, public policy, cultural studies and political science.
Prospective applicants are invited to develop original research proposals that critically examine the role of sport in advancing Ireland's foreign policy and international engagement. Topics may include, but are not limited to, sport as an instrument of soft power and public diplomacy; sport and diaspora engagement; major sporting events and diplomatic legacy; sport for development; sports technology and economic diplomacy; international sporting governance; or comparative analyses of sports diplomacy in small states. Proposals should seek not only to enhance understanding of Ireland's evolving approach to sport diplomacy but also to contribute to broader international debates on the role of sport in contemporary diplomacy and foreign policy.
